Historic Agreement (会津若松市との親善交流都市締結式)

サイパン市と会津若松市との歴史的な親善交流都市締結式がここサイパンで１１月２２日に執り行なわれました。
福島県会津若松市は、サトウキビ王として有名な松江春次氏の出身地です。　ここサイパンとは縁のある都市です。


Aizu Wakamatsu mayor visits Saipan

Aizu Wakamatsu City Mayor Ichiro Kanke led a large delegation of city officials to the Sugar King Park yesterday for a tree planting ceremony dedicated to the memory of Sugar King Haruji Matzue, and to memorialize a sister-city relationship between Saipan and the Japanese city.

Saipan Mayor Juan B. Tudela joined the mayor and his delegation in planting three fruit trees near the Sugar King monument. The three fruit trees were soursoup, atis, and Chamorro Kiwi.

The planting of the fruit trees, Tudela said, was to commemorate Kanke's return to the island and to signify the continuing growth of the relationship between Saipan and the city of Aizu Wakamatsu.

Haruji Matsue, the famous “Sugar King” business entrepreneur who founded the Nanyo Kohatsu Kaisha, or NKK, company and for whom the Sugar King Park is named after, was from the city of Aizu Wakamatsu.

Matsue came to Saipan in 1929 and started his sugar manufacturing business.

This business, Tudela said, brought prosperity to Saipan. “Today a 25-foot statue in Garapan stands in the middle of the park, signifying the great contribution this individual has made in the development of Saipan,” Tudela said.

“There are very few historical statues of Japan located outside our country. One is of a famous Japanese bacteriologist, Hideo Noguchi, located in Mexico and one is of the famous “Sugar King” Haruji Matsue, located here on Saipan. They are both from the city of Aizu Wakamatsu,” Kanke said.

Two years ago on Sept. 22, 2006, Tudela and Kanke signed an amicable sister-city agreement between Saipan and Aizu Wakamatsu City.

Yesterday morning, Tudela, Kanke, chairman Toyohiko Tazawa, and head of the Association of the Chief of Wards Kanichi Ohashi planted three fruit trees adjacent to the Sugar King monument.

Upon conclusion of the ceremony, Tazawa said, “We hope for the continuing health and happiness of all the people in Saipan.”


この日はサイパン市長主催の歓迎レセプションがホテルで行なわれ、ご招待を受け出席させて頂きました。



会津若松市市長とサイパン市長、そして日本からいらした交流団の方々です。


この後は、子供達のダンスパフォーマンスなどがあり、和やかな雰囲気で終始笑顔があふれていました。

翌日は、松江春次氏の銅像があるシュガーキング公園で記念植樹式典が行なわれました。


２年前に植樹をしたパンの木が大きく育ち、今年はその横にナッツ、アチョテ、サワーサップの木を植えました。　
戦争中は、これらの実を食料にして飢えを忍んだとの説明がありました。


松江春次氏の銅像の前で、両市長の熱い握手がありました。
この銅像は、７ｍ７０ｃｍもあります。　戦争の戦火にも免れて今も堂々と建っています。


今回、参加されたみなさんの記念撮影です。
この中に戦争前からサイパンに住んでいた人がいらっしゃいます。

その方のお話の中に、ビーチロードにある【メリケン松】は、サトウキビ工場の燃料になる為に、住民によって植樹されたそうです。　　南洋桜も季節感のないサイパンに季節感を持たせる為に桜と名づけたそうです。

この交流が末永く益々発展されますことをお祈り申し上げます。

CNMI Arbor Day（植樹祭）

去年は、スーサイドクリフにある南洋群島帰還者会【平和観音像】の清掃を、国籍を問わずパブリック・プライベートセクターが一つになって活動をしました。この島で一番古い【世界平和】を祈願して作られた慰霊碑です。

あれから丁度１年です。。。。。ISA CNMIも丁度一年が経ちました。

今年は、CNMIのCongresswomanのCinta-sanから招待され、ARBOR-DAYに参加してきました。
バンザイクリフにある退役軍人のお墓の入り口とバンザイクリフに下りていく道端に植樹をしました。
この度のイラク戦争で亡くなられた方々のファミリーやボーイスカウト、政府機関等たくさん集まりフレームツリーとココナッツツリーと交互に植えていきました。

私も又、$20払って、フレームツリーの植樹をしました。


以前より私のブログを読んで頂いている方はご存知だと思いますが、ビーチロード沿いに私と娘のフレームツリーを植樹し、新聞にも載せて頂いたのですが・・・・・・

その木の成長を娘と確認に行ったら・・・・・笑わないで下さいね。

ナント！！こんなに枯れてしまっているではないですか？？？
これって、まだ葉っぱをつける可能性があるの？
Angeloに相談することにします。　ちょっと残念で悲しかったですね↓↓↓

そして、娘のフレームツリーは・・・・・

こんなに大きく成長しています。　よかった♪♪♪
大きく育って、きれいな花を咲かせてくださいね。


たくさんの人なのでどこにいるのかわからないと思います。　その上にグリーンのT-シャツを着ていたので、植木と同化してしまっています。　前列の右端にいます（笑）

NMI honors fallen heroes with Marpi tree planting

Families of the CNMI's fallen heroes came together yesterday morning and remembered their departed loved ones with the planting of hundreds of trees at the CNMI Veterans Cemetery in Marpi as part of celebrations for CNMI's Arbor Day.

The families of the late SSgt. Wilgene Lieto, Cpl. Derence Jack, Lance Cpl. Adam Quitugua Emul, and Cpl. Joe Junior Gogue Charfauros joined at least a hundred community members for the tree planting ceremony.

Military Veterans Affairs Office executive director Ruth Coleman said the Charfauros family in Rota even flew in for the event. Families of the late Jesse Castro also flew in from Guam, while the family of the late war veteran Gregorio Cabrera were also present.

Coleman said many CNMI soldiers on active duty also planted some trees. The family of the late Sgt. Yihjyh “Eddie” Chen called Coleman from Guam to acknowledge the event.

Beautify CNMI founder and Arbor Day Committee officer Rep. Cinta Kaipat expressed her gratitude to the participants, saying it was another successful tree planting event. “I am delighted and grateful for the response from the community once again. I am touched and honored to have all the three islands participating in the event,” she said.

CNMI forester and Arbor Day Committee officer Vic Guerrero said Arbor Day has been an annual tradition in the CNMI. Arbor Day is also being observed across the US.

“The increased observance and emphasis given by the CNMI demonstrates our deep appreciation for the beauty of trees and their many benefits,” reads part of the proclamation letter declaring Arbor Day.

Guerrero said at least 45 flame tree seedlings were planted yesterday. The flame tree is the state tree of the CNMI.

Two Golden Showers trees were also planted at the entrance to the veterans memorial park. Guerrero said these two trees would later produce chandelier-like yellow flowers that are appropriate to honor the CNMI war heroes.

Participants

Public School System's Troops-to-Teachers participants led by coordinator Geri Willis also participated. Thirty former servicemen and women-turned-teacher aides said the event is very significant for them. Troops-to-Teachers pioneer member Winfred Camacho said they participated to honor the CNMI's fallen heroes.

Members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3457 led by Commander Mariano Fajardo, the U.S. Coast Guard, Division of Agriculture, ISA CNMI, Friends of the Mariana Islands, Youth Center of the Church of the Latter Day Saints, CNMI Boy Scouts, Team Chura Talo, RC & D, Northern Marianas College, Office of the Governor, among many others, were also present.

Families and community members who also shared their time yesterday were Dr. James Hofschneider and family, Mike and Juanita Sablan family, Ed and Lupe Flores family, Jerry Facey, Rep. Cinta Kaipat's Office and family, Tom Gibson, Ray Mafnas and many more.

来週の土曜日（１１月３日）は、日本人会の主催で、日本政府が国籍を問わず第二次世界大戦で亡くなった方々を慰霊する為に建立した【中部太平洋慰霊碑】の清掃です。　

KATORI SHRINE IN SAIPAN（香取神社）

先週の土曜日（１０月２０日）にサイパン島シュガーキングパークの中にある香取神社で秋の例祭が行なわれました。

この香取神社は千葉県成田市にある神社なのですが、サイパンが日本時代にサイパン島の中心地に建てられ、多くの人達が参拝していた神社の一つです。
戦争により、本殿などが壊されましたが、１９１１年に建立され、２３年前に復興された神社です。
毎年、１０月の土曜日に、日本の香取神宮から宮司さんや関係者の方がいらっしゃり、島民の安全、島の発展の為に祝詞をあげていただきます。

日本人会は、この香取神宮の神事にあわせ、現地の人達との地域交流の為に秋祭りを行ないます。　残念ながら、秋祭りの写真がありませんが、毎年お天気には悩まされます。

日本人会理事や出店業者の方々は、本当にお疲れ様でした。

いつもはこのようにひっそりと見守ってくれている神社です。


この神社を復興してからも、何度もいたずらをされ、この建物にも扉がついていたのですが、残念ながらすべて盗まれてしまいました。
２年前に屋根の葺き替えをし、ペイントを塗りなおしました。


この場所の管轄は、メイヤーズオフィス（サイパン市長）で、最近この公園にフェンスが完成しました。
毎日、この公園のそうじや管理をしてくれている人達に頼んで、例祭が始まるまでにそうじをしてもらいました。


最初は、たわしと雑巾で手でしていたのですが、全然前に進みません。　時間がないし、お天気は悪いしで、ウォーターブラスターで「ブィ～ン」と頑張ってもらいました。

【香取神社清掃保存活動】です。



皆さんが到着までにきれいになったので一安心です。
年に一度ですが、この香取山が喜んでいるように見えます。





毎年例祭に参加されている協和建設平山社長より、日本人会へ法被と手ぬぐいを頂きました。
いつもお気遣いを頂き、誠にありがとうございます。

２０１１年にこの地に神社が建立されて１００年になります。
いろんな人のいろんな祈願を受け入れてきた神社。　残念ながら第二次世界大戦で壊されましたが、いくつかの灯篭などは戦前からのものだそうです。

ISA CNMIはこれからも、日本とCNMIとの虹の架け橋になるような活動を続けていきたいと、改めて感じさせられました。

SAIPAN Mayor Juan B. Tudela and Marianas Visitors Authority Managing Director, Perry Tenorio on Saturday joined the Japanese community in a prayer and thanksgiving ceremony at the Katori Jinja Shrine in Sugar King Park in Garapan “for peace and prosperity.”
The event coincided with the celebration of the Japanese Autumn Festival.
The rites led by a Guji or master priest was started by a dance ritual by two “mikos” or females and the Tamagushi Hono — the offering of “holy branches” to the shrine.
CNMI Japanese Society chairman Joji Kawagushi led the guests in offering holy branches.
Build in 1911, the Katori shrine was destroyed during World War II and was reconstructed in 1985.
For Aya Matsumoto of Pacific Eagle and an active supporter of Beautify CNMI!, the Katori shrine ceremony is also a prayer for abundance.
The mayor’s office as part of its improvement project, have enclosed the Sugar King Park with a fence but, according MVA’s Tenorio, the Katori Shrine will remain accessible to the public.
Mayor Tudela said they are planning to have a food court at the park.

Beautify CNMI with Nihon University

朝７時、いつもなら太陽が出ている頃なのでしょうが、この日はどうもお天気があまりよくありません。
日本から到着した次の日、日本大学の学生さん達が、早起きをしてビーチ清掃をしてくれました。

日本でCNMIのリサーチをしている時にBeautify CNMIのブログを見て、是非参加してみたいとの申し出に感激しました。　少しの時間でいいから、手伝ってくれることが大切なのですよね。


シュガードックからアクエリアス前のビーチまでをみんなで清掃しました。


この辺のビーチではウィークエンドにBBQをする人が多いので、結構ゴミが落ちています。


Mariana Islands Nature Allianceの活動の説明をし、今この島で行なわれているBeautify CNMIの説明を力を入れて喋っています（笑）
頼りないけれど環境保護団体【MINA】の理事だから・・・・・（汗）
AngeloからはT-シャツに書いてある【Restoration】の説明を受けました。

Rep.CintaさんやAngeloから、プラスティックのゴミが一番ウミガメにとってよくない！との説明です。
プラスティックバッグをあまり使わずに、このトートバッグを持って買い物に行きましょう！

その後、みんなでカレッジの授業を受けに移動です。

少し難しかったでしょうか？というよりもエアコンが効きすぎて寒かったですね！


お昼からはお天気が悪かったのですが、ゲレロさんが待っていて下さるので八幡神社に行ってみました。


この神社はゲレロさんが毎日そうじをして守って下さっているので、いつもきれいに保護されています。
ありがとうございます。


Cinta-san達の方が早くて、なんと北マリアナ知事がそこにいらしたのにはびっくりしました。

この方は？？？

ここ北マリアナ諸島で一番の高齢者であるエリザベス松永さんです。
そうです！　サイパンにある老人ケアーセンター【マナムコ】に行って、一緒に歌を唄ったり、折り紙をしたり、お話を聞いたりしてみました。


とても明るく元気なシニアの皆さんで、学生さん達が圧倒されていましたが、すぐに溶け込み、話に花が咲いていました。　

とても有意義なサイパン滞在になったのではないでしょうか。　
これを機会に又サイパンに来てくださいね。

これは北マリアナのニュース番組です。
毎日夕方６時からチャンネル２で放送されています。

この日のニュースに灯台の清掃について報道されました。

インタビューを受けているのはBeautify CNMIをリードしてくれているMr. Angelo Villagomezさんです。



１０年以上も落書きをされ続けてきたのに、何も出来なかったのですが、ここに来てようやく史跡保護も理解してもらい、このようなボランティアによる活動が出来ました。
これからもＮＰＯを中心に環境保護、史跡保護を続けていきたいと思いますのでよろしくお願い致します。

Fight with Graffiti at Light House（日本灯台跡の落書き）

とてもいいお天気のサイパン。
マニャガハ島がくっきりときれいに見えます。


そうです！　ここはネイビーヒルにあるライトハウス。
この建物は日本時代（1934年）にタナパグ港に入港する船の為に建てられた建造物です。
今でもしっかりと海を見守ってくれています。
1974年にこの灯台はアメリカ国立史跡登録への最初の候補として指名され、承認された４つの北マリアナ史跡のうちの１つです。

以前にも何度もお伝えしたように、マナーの悪い人達によって、真っ白な灯台が落書きだらけになり、ジャングルのように木々で覆われ、とても悲しそうな灯台になっていました。



Beautify CNMIとともに何度も清掃活動をしていきましたが、草が生える威力が強く、すぐにタガンタガンが育ってしまい草刈だけでも大変です。

今日は、落書きとの戦いです。



先ず、スクレイパーで落書きを削ります。
この作業が、粉塵を吸い込んだりして大変です。
作業用のマスクと手袋と完全武装です。





ジュンジ君は朝カフェのオープンまでの時間を手伝ってくれました。
ほんの少しの時間でも手伝ってくれることが大切なんですよね。　　
ありがとうございます。


子供達もお手伝いです。


サイパンのツーリズムからはR&C Toursの皆さんが参加してくれました。
Beautify CNMIから、オリジナルバックとＴシャツのプレゼントです。


今日は１日掛かりなので、ランチはBBQをしてホットドッグやハンバーガーを食べました。


ランチブレイクにアンジェロはかまきりとお友達に。
頭の上に載せたり、顔に載せたり・・・・・私には出来ない！！
最後にはかまきりにかまれていました（笑）。。。。。





私も朝からのペイント剥がしでだいぶ疲れてきました。


こちらも少しお疲れのようで・・・・・




R&C Toursの皆さんも頑張ってくれました。



灯台の中の写真がないのですが、とてもきれいになりました。
もう少し、仕上げをしたいので来週の日曜日もペイントを再度することにしています。

みんなが帰った後の灯台。
真っ白になり、青い空の下、どうどうと建っています。
正直、一日でここまできれいになるとは思っていませんでしたが、出来ました！！

「落書きは何秒かで書けますが、落書きを落とすのは膨大な時間と労力です。落書きをする人間にはわからないだろうなァ・・・・」
