8月1日（土）2日（日）の2日間に亘って、恒例のTOCゴルフトーナメントが、ここサイパンのラオラオベイゴルフリゾートで熱い戦いが行われました。

年に1度の大きなトーナメントなので、早朝6時集合とは言え、早くから集まり、ドライビングレンジで練習する人や、パッティンググリーンで練習する人で、いつものゴルフとは違うピリッと感があります。

日本から5名、韓国から6名、グアムから30名の参加があり、総勢120名が各フライトにわかれて、ラオラオベイゴルフリゾートのイーストとウエストコース、36ホールに分かれ、ショットガンでのスタートです。

しかし・・・・

初日は、生憎の大雨でグリーンにも水が溜まってしましい、トーナメントはキャンセルになってしまいました。　傘をさしても、強風と共に横殴りの雨の為、ぐしょぐしょになってしまいました。

トーナメントは1日のみの決戦となり、日曜日も早朝からスタート前の練習風景はプロトーナメントのように真剣そのものでした。

Repeat winner, visitors rule TOC

A defending champion and a couple of visiting golfers reigned supreme in the shortened 2009 Saipan Tournament of Champions.

Guam's Louie Sunga returned to Saipan and successfully defended his title in the centerpiece Championship Flight of the annual tournament that was played only for one round.

Only scores in yesterday's round were counted, as organizers cancelled the opening round due to bad weather. It rained Friday evening until Saturday morning, making both the east and west courses of the Laolao Bay Golf Resort unplayable.

Yesterday, the weather was better, allowing golfers to finish their game as early as 11am.

“I am glad we were able to play in the second round. Although the fairways were still wet, the greens were good and the wind was a bit cooperative,” said Sunga, who along with more than 100 participants played only two holes last Saturday before organizers suspended the round.

The Mangilao resident tamed the east course with his 2-under par 70 for back-to-back wins in the Championship Flight.

Saipan resident Bae Yong Man also shot a 2-under-par 70, but lost to Sunga in the sudden death playoff on hole No. 17. Sunga had a birdie on the par-4 hole, while Man only saved par, missing a birdie shot by four feet.

Despite the threat of another bad weather, Sunga found his victory yesterday much easier than in 2008.

“It was a bit easier this time, as we played only one round and I was much prepared this year. I've been practicing in Guam and joining several tournaments to prepare for my title defense,” the 37-year-old golfer said.

The Guam golfer topped last year's Championship Flight with a two-round score of 3-over par 147. He struggled in the opening round, placing only fourth after firing a 75. An even par 72 in the second round saved Sunga the win against Korean Gi Yeong Kim, who led in the first round with his 73, but dropped to second after nailing a 75 in the second round for a total of 4-over par 148.

In yesterday's game, Sunga had an even par 36 on the front nine and improved his performance by two strokes in the last nine holes with his 2-under par 34. Bae had the same front and back nines scores, but failed to get the needed break in the playoff hole to settle for the runner-up cash prize of $500.

Completing the Top 5 were Joji Taguchi (73), Seung Woo Kang (74), and Lee Jong Won (76).

Meanwhile, majority of the winners in the other flights were visitors from Korea, Guam, and Japan.

Korea's Yun Jeong Kim ruled the Ladies Open with her gross score of 75, beating Guam's Rose Tarpley (83) and Saipan's Noriko Togawa (83). Kimiko Abe of Japan won in the Ladies Low Net, while Saipan's Lorraine Babauta and Korea's Naeun Song finished second and third, respectively.

In the Super Seniors Flight, Guam's Bill Gariss shot a gross 77 to outclass Saipan's Jess Taitano (82) and Duke Yoo (84). Making it to the Top 5 were Korean's Kwang Min Kim and Guam's Mike Conley.

Manny Mangarero redeemed Saipan's pride when he defeated Guam's Victorino Borja in playoffs in the Seniors Flight. Both golfers shot a gross 77, but Mangarero won in the tiebreak after saving par on hole No. 17. Tony Satur (78) finished third, while last year's winner Ed Manibusan dropped to fourth. Guam's George Tydingco completed the Top 5.

Japan's Yoshinori Yamamoto had a three-stroke win in the C Flight, as he fired a gross 82 against runner-up Tony Sablan's 85. Marianas Visitors Authoriry's Martin Duenas placed third with his gross 87. Mario Taitano and Edward Sablan made it to the Top 5.

Rep. Diego Benavente topped the B Flight with a three-shot victory over Jun Calma, as the former drilled a gross 80 against the latter's 83. Ben Marborang (84), Tony Rogolifoi (84), and George Fleming (86) rounded out the Top 5.

Korea's Tae Sung Seol was the fifth visitor to rule a division, as he claimed first place in the A Flight. Seol carded a 4-over par 76 for a one-shot win over Saipan's Yasu Irinaka (77) and Guam's Phillip Mark Santos (77). Irinaka took the runner-up prize after beating Santos in the playoff hole.

このトーナメントは競技性も高いのですが、同時にサイパンビューティフィケーションファンドと言って、島をきれいにする為のファンドレイジングでもあります。

コミッティーの皆さん、悪天候の中、本当にお疲れ様でした。

毎年思うのですが、来年こそは上位3位までに入りたいってね！？（笑）

この前のブログでマニャガハ島について書いたのですが、この島を管理、運営されているTASI TOURSから素敵なプロモーションビデオ(PV)を紹介されましたので、早速ブログで皆さんにご紹介です。



マリンスポーツがこんなに充実していると1日では物足りないかもしれませんね。

マリンスポーツの合間に島を探検に行くのもおもしろいでしょうね。
魚たちはもちろん、鳥の自然保護区になっているので、珍しい鳥が見られるかもしれませんね。

マリンスポーツとかの受付が出来るインフォメーションセンターの反対側には、カロリニアン人の酋長だったチーフアグルプの銅像があります。　説によると、昔々台風で荒らされた故郷のカロリン諸島からマリアナ諸島に移り住み、カロリニアンの定住地を確立したのは、アグルプ酋長だったそうです。

年に一度カロリニアンの人々によって大きなお祭りがあるそうです。

そして、リゾートアイランドにも歴史が残っています。。。

マニャガハ島には第2次世界大戦時の大砲や迎撃用トーチカ、2丁の海岸防衛用銃とかが残っています。　その当時は、前戦防御域として29人の兵士が配備されていたのですが、1944年7月13日にマニャガハ島は、アメリカ海兵隊によって占領されたそうです。

サイパンに着たら、是非訪れて頂きたいのがマニャガハ島です。　　
このブログのトップに載せている写真がマニャガハ島です。
とてもきれいな海に囲まれ、ボートで１０分、スピードボートだと５分で行けます。



本日2009年7月21日のサイパンの地元紙サイパントリビューンの一面にマニャガハ島のビーチが世界で第３位に選ばれたことが載っていました。

これは、サイパンの旅行業界にとって、とても素敵な話題ですね。　

ご紹介したいと思います。

Insatiable bliss. That is how some describe Managaha island in the Northern Mariana Islands, a tiny isle recently named No. 3 on Yahoo Japan's “must-see ranking” of Best Beaches in the World.

A dot of white-sand and tropic palms inside the lagoon of Saipan island in the Pacific, Managaha was recently highlighted under the Summer Trip 2009 category by travel agencies associated with Yahoo Travel.

“Managaha is somewhat magical, almost a focal point for the whitest sand, warmest sun, bluest skies, and richest marine life on Saipan,” said Marianas Visitors Authoritymanaging director Perry Tenorio. “It's is an unforgettable experience for any visitor.”

Saipan teen and MVA student intern Raquel Pelisman has been to Managaha twice.

“It's really an amazing place. The sand is so vast and white-even at night you see clearly,” Pelisman said. “Moonlit volleyball is fun, and you can sleep out on the sand looking up at the stars.”

Since 2004 the island has also received six acknowledgements at the annual Marine Diving Fair in Tokyo, including being named “Best Beach & Snorkeling Spot” at the 7th Dive & Travel Awards 2008.

A few minutes on a comfortable ferry from the main island of Saipan, Managaha offers isolation in paradise from everyday life and tranquility framed by historical landmarks and tropical nature lying in wait to be explored. The Northern Mariana Islands is three hours by plane from Japan.





長年サイパンに住んでいても、マニャガハ島に行けば別世界だし、かなり癒されます。
マリンスポーツ等も充実していて、一番のお気に入りは、パラセイリングでした。
きれいな海や砂浜、マニャガハを見ながら、空に上がり、そこには、風の音が耳に心地よく、誰も邪魔しない独り占め出来る豪華な景色を見下ろすことが出来ます。

日本から来た友達は、サイパンでの３泊４日の３日間を毎日マニャガハで過ごした人もいました。　日本での仕事の忙しさから解放された時間の過ごし方としては最高ですね！！

それでは、サイパンにいらした時には是非、世界第３位のマニャガハ島のビーチでの～んびりくつろいで
下さいね。

落書きです!!

7月13日の午後12時半から午後5時半の間に落書きされました。
交通量の多い、人通りがあり、道を挟んで、向かいにはＤＥＱと言って、政府環境局があります。　
そういう場所でも落書きされるようになってしまったサイパン・・・・・

7月４日独立記念パレードin サイパン

７月４日の独立記念、これはサイパンの場合はアメリカとはちょっと違うのかもしれませんね。

1944年7月9日サイパン戦、陥落後は、15,000人の市民と言っても半分は15歳以下の子供達だったそうですが2年間ススペキャンプでの生活が始まりました。　米軍は医療や食料を与えてくれたそうですが、限られた食料で病気が蔓延し、赤痢とかもあったそうです。　後に同年11月15日にチャモロとカロリニアン人はチャランカノアキャンプに移動したそうです。

サイパン戦はアメリカが初めて1万人以上というたくさんの捕虜を扱った場所だそうです。

1946年7月4日にキャンプから解放し、日本や韓国の市民は国に帰還する事が出来、チャモロやカロリニアンの人達は独自の行政機関の立ち上げをしたそうです。

サイパン戦が終わってから2年近くかかったようですね。


毎年北マリアナ日本人会でフロートを出したり、パレードに参加したりしていたのですが、今年はいろいろとあるようで参加出来ませんでした。　
今年のタイトルは、【Path to the Peace】平和への道です。

私は、ＩＴ＆Ｅからの依頼で、いろんなスポーツチームと共に、CNMI Women's Golf Associationとしてパレードに参加して来ました。　
【The set of values members of CWGA are committed to faithfully are as follows: perseverance; sportsmanship; respect; honesty; judgment; responsibility; reliance; courtesy; and sincerity. 】
　
いつもはゆかたを着て参加していただけに、なんだか変な感じでしたが、楽しかった！！

野球、サッカー、バスケットボール、ゴルフ、バトミントンなど・・・・・


このフロートは今年度の優勝フロートで、フィリピン人協会です。

あいにくのお天気だったのですが、エコなお花になっている子供達がとってもかわいいでしょう！！


そして・・・・・

今年【Beautify CNMI】がパレードに参加するのですが、ただ歩くのではなく沿道でファミリーパーティーをして楽しんでいる方々にゴミ袋を渡して、｢ゴミをそのままにしないで、ちゃんと片付けて下さいね！｣と環境に対しての住民意識の向上を目的にしたのですが、ボランティアとして集まったのはいつものコアメンバーだけでした。

パシフィックイーグルはトラックと共にボランティア活動です。

この写真は、北マリアナ代表の米国議員であるキリリ・サブラン氏と一緒に記念撮影です。

サイパンから旅だって・・・

サイパンから旅立って、日本での大学生活を少し経験し、その後アメリカに行った２人の娘。
離れていて心配ですが、それぞれ１人で一生懸命周りの方々に助けてもらいながら生活しているようです。

姉は、この１２月までにインターンを終わらせて無事卒業だそうです。
親としてはやれやれです。。。。

サンフランシスコベイエリアに本拠地のある女性のプロサッカーチーム【FCゴールドプライド】です。

みんな恰好いいですね♪♪♪

FC Gold Pride　米女子プロサッカーリーグ（WPS）にいる荒川恵理子選手（なでしこジャパン）のマーケティングを担当しているようです。

このように荒川選手と地元日本人補習校を訪問したそうです。

その他にホームスタジアムで８月１日には【JAPAN NIGHT】があるそうですので、サンフランシスコベイエリアにお住まいの方は是非参加してみて下さい。

この日は澤選手のいるチームとの対戦があるようで、荒川選手も澤選手(Washinton Freedom所属)も両方応援できますね！


楽しそうなイベントですね！！

SFベイエリアは規模が大きいので本人にとってもいい勉強になっていると思います。

Terrific Tennis Tandem: Rika and Lauren

Rika Matsumoto and Lauren Heino come from two different backgrounds, but they couldn’t be better partners both on and off the court. Just over a year ago, Matsumoto moved here from a small island called Saipan. After a year and a half in a Japanese college, she had decided it was not the place for her. Heino, however, was born at Overlake Hospital and raised in Woodinville.

In first grade, Matsumoto’s mother wanted her to play a sport, and when they heard about an amazing tennis coach, her mother took her to him. For Heino, it wasn’t until sixth grade that she started playing.

As far as tennis goes, there was actually a time when Matsumoto wasn’t sure it was what she wanted to do. “I actually quit in [fifth] grade and played volleyball all the way until senior [year] of high school,” Matsumoto said. “I was also [on] the national volleyball team during my senior year in high school, but [having a] bad coach killed it for me.”

Tennis isn’t the only game for Heino, either. “I play tennis because it is easy to just pick up a racket and get out there,” says Heino. “However, I play basketball and softball for fun too, [but] it is hard to get a big group for a full game.”

The team was brought together by a set of most unusual circumstances: fried chicken. Last year, the Bulldog’s tennis team was at an away match when coach Jason Chapman took the team to Safeway to buy dinner. While the team was buying salads, fruits, and other healthy foods, Matsumoto was buying fried chicken. “

[Chapman] told my partner, Lauren, that we will play bottom doubles because I ate fried chicken before the match,” says Matsumoto. “Lauren was mad at me, and I was mad at Lauren for being mad at me. We did not talk to each other until we got on the court.”

Once they got there however, they shared a hug and apologized to each other, then they played really well together. A friendship and a partnership were born. Now, however, they’re all about this season. Their goals are singular and clear cut. “NWAACC champs … and I want the girls to get closer than we already are,” said Heino.

One thing that can definitely help with that goal is a good coach, which, according to the girls, they have. “I love my coach to death,” says Matsumoto. “He’s like my dad out here just because [I was] out here in the states by myself, and didn’t really have anyone to rely on. He has helped me in every aspect of life besides tennis. He pushes me to study harder, to be nice, honest, and professional.”

ここまでテニスが強くなれたのもサイパンのテニスコーチ, Mr. Jeff Raceのお陰です。　小さな時から根気よく教えて頂き、とても感謝しています。　

サイパンは小さな島ですがスポーツをするにはとてもいい環境です。　水泳、テニス、サッカー、ゴルフ等、レッスンを受けるには最高の場所かもしれませんね。

そして文武両道の考え方がとても素敵ですよね。

これは、先日クライバーン国際ピアノコンクールで優勝した辻井伸行さんのご紹介の記事です。

ナント！！



サイパンのＤＦＳ（デューティーフリーショッパーズ）本店の中にエルメス・シャネル・ヴィトンなどがずらりと並ぶブティック街があります。　そこには自動演奏のグランドピアノが置いてあるのですが、辻井さんが５歳の時に、そのピアノを弾いたのがきっかけで、人前でピアノを演奏する喜びを知ったそうです。

アエラの記事の一部をご紹介します。

原点はどこにあるのか。

５歳のとき、ピアノを始めて一年が過ぎていた。
場所はサイパン。
ショッピングモールを歩いていると、自動演奏しているピアノが置かれていた。　奏でられているピアノを前に、｢弾きたい、弾きたい｣とぐずった。

モールの店員が自動演奏を解除してくれた。
伸行さんはそのグランドピアノを弾いた。　徐々に聴衆が集まってきた。　しかし、彼の目に聴衆は映っていない、家で練習しているのと何も変わらない、つもりでいた。
が、弾き終わると、
｢ブラボー！　ブラボー！！｣
と声が掛かり、拍手も起きた。
驚いた｡　聴衆の前で弾いたのはこれが初めてだったからだ。

盲目のせいだけではないだろう。　幼かった伸行さんは、いままで自分が弾いた演奏が評価されるなんでことまで、思いが至っていなかった。　だが、人から受ける称賛の声と拍手を初めて体験し、これまでにない嬉しさを感じだという。

DFSに行かれた時には、天才を育んだピアノ、そしてサイパンの人達の温かさ触れてみて下さいね。
１５年前、もしかしたらDFSで辻井さんに拍手をしていたかもしれませんね。

Earth Marathon

2008年1月【サイパンマラソン】のTV番組収録で初めて間寛平さんにお会いしました。
結構タイトなロケスケジュールだったのですが、私達の知らない間に、寛平さんはサイパンを黙々と走ってたそうです。。。。すごい！！

｢サイパンはええとこやなァ～♪｣って言って頂き、私はランナーではないのですがうれしくなりました。
ありがとうございます！！

勇気と希望をもらえるこの挑戦！！

南洋群島帰還者会【40th Okinawa Peace Memorial Ceremony】

南洋群島帰還者墓参会の宜野座会長始め、帰還者会の皆様からご招待を受け、５月２７日、おきなわの塔での慰霊祭に参加させて頂きました。　　

第2次世界大戦前、30年以上に亘り、ここサイパンを含む南洋群島は日本の統治下にありました。
日本からたくさんの方々が移り住み、多くの苦労もあったそうですが、島民と仲良く、南洋群島を開拓をしてきた方々です。　　残念な事にある日突然平和な暮らしが一変してしまいました。

1968年6月に第1回慰霊墓参団がいらしてから41年、今年は記念すべき第40回の節目の年です。




とてもお天気が良く、たくさんの地元ローカルの方々もこの式典に参加され、沖縄の方と久し振りの再会に笑顔で挨拶されていました。

たくさんのお供えは、戦争で亡くなった家族の為に、地元沖縄の食べ物やお酒をお供えされていました。

開会の辞を伊禮さんがお話され、墓参団としては最後の訪問になるそうですが、若い人達に継いでいって頂きたいとおっしゃっていました。

人間国宝の照喜名朝一氏による奉納の三線演奏です。

残念ながら写真がないのですが、玉城流翔節会お家元の玉城節子さんの舞も披露されました。

夜の懇親会では宜野座会長、そしてこの会を長年に亘ってケアされているPacific Development Inc.(PDI)松村社長と記念撮影です。

体調を崩されていたと伺い心配しておりましたが、今年もお目にかかれて良かったです。

いつまでもお元気な笑顔で皆様方とサイパンでお会いできますことを心より祈っております。
ここで生活している私達日本人が少しでも何かお手伝いが出来るのであれば・・・・・


追伸：実はこの日記を書いた数日後、宜野座会長がご逝去されたと連絡が入りました。
　　　平成２１年６月１０日、午後７時２５分
　　　悪性リンパ腫の為ご逝去されました。

心よりご冥福をお祈り致します、そして・・・・・
安らかにお眠り下さい。
